Spring is one of my absolute favourite times for outdoor photo sessions — everything feels lighter, brighter, and a little bit more playful. And honestly? That playful energy makes such a difference for kids.
If you’ve ever worried your child might be shy, silly, or “not behave” in front of the camera… you’re definitely not alone. But the magic of outdoor spring sessions is that they’re not about standing still and smiling they’re about connection, movement, and letting kids be themselves.
Here are 5 ways spring outdoor sessions help kids open up and actually enjoy the experience:
1. There’s space to move (and that changes everything)
Kids aren’t built to stand still and I don’t expect them to. Outdoors, they can run, explore, climb, twirl, and just be. That freedom instantly takes the pressure off and turns the session into something that feels like play, not a task.
2. Play breaks the ice (especially for shy little ones)
For children who feel a bit unsure around new people (which is completely normal), jumping straight into “say cheese” can feel overwhelming. But when we start with games like chasing, hide and seek, picking flowers something shifts.
Shy children often don’t need prompting… they just need space. And when they’re busy playing, they forget to feel nervous. That’s when the real smiles start to appear, the quiet genuine ones.
3. Every personality is welcomed (and celebrated)
No two children are the same, and that’s exactly how it should be. Some kids arrive full of energy and ready to perform. Others hang back, observe, and take their time.
I follow their lead.
There’s no “one way” to do a session, whether your child is loud, quiet, cuddly, independent, or a mix of everything, the session is shaped around them. That’s where the most meaningful moments come from.
4. Nature gives us built-in fun
Spring does half the work for us. There are flowers to pick, sticks to collect, bugs to investigate, and open spaces to explore.
Instead of asking kids to pose, I let them interact with what’s around them. Those little in-between moments, muddy hands, windy hair, giggles over nothing and that’s where the magic lives.
5. It becomes about connection, not perfection
The best photos aren’t the perfectly posed ones, they’re the ones where you can feel something.
A hand held tightly. A burst of laughter. A cuddle that wasn’t planned.
When kids feel relaxed and free, those moments happen naturally. And that’s what my sessions are all about, genuine connection, real emotion, and capturing your family as you truly are.
At the end of the day, spring sessions aren’t about getting kids to “behave” they’re about giving them the freedom to play, explore, and warm up in their own time.
Because when they do… that’s when the magic happens 🌿✨
