Why I’m a Bit Obsessed with Chatting to You Before Your Photo Session (and Why It Makes the Magic Happen)

If you’ve ever booked a newborn or family session with me, you’ll know I’m not the “turn up on the day and hope for the best” type of photographer. Nope. I’m the “let’s have a little natter beforehand, send you a questionnaire, and basically become part of the family for a few hours” type.

And here’s why.

It’s Not Just About the Photos – It’s About You

Photography, for me, isn’t just ticking a box that says “we’ve got a nice family photo now.” It’s about capturing the real you – your personalities, quirks, and the tiny little things that make you a family.

That’s why, before every session, I send out a little questionnaire. It’s not to give you homework (promise!) but to help me get to know you. Do your kids love dinosaurs? Is your toddler in a “wears only superhero capes” phase? Do you have a favourite cuddle pose? Knowing these little details means I can tailor your session so it feels like you, not like some generic Pinterest board.

Why It Matters for Newborn Sessions

If I know your baby’s feeding and sleeping habits, or whether you prefer a more lifestyle approach over posed images, I can make sure our time together is relaxed and stress-free. My aim is always to work with your family’s flow, not against it – because newborn sessions should feel calm, cosy, and full of those “oh my goodness, we’re parents!” moments.

And It’s Not Just About the Kids

Yes, I love knowing your children’s favourite snacks and giggle triggers, but I also want to know about you. Are you camera-shy? Do you hate your left side (even though I think it’s gorgeous)? Do you want a few couple shots while the kids are playing? I’ve got you.

The more I know, the more your gallery feels like a slice of your real life – and that’s what makes it timeless.

A Little Yorkshire Reality…

We might plan for golden sunlight, but we both know Yorkshire likes to keep us on our toes. I’ve done sessions in warm evening light, soft mist, and the occasional “wellies required” drizzle – and they’ve all been beautiful in their own way. Muddy boots and windswept hair often end up being the best bits (and they make for cracking stories when you look back on the photos years later).

Pssst… Mini Session Alert!

Speaking of family magic, I’ve got Family Mini Sessions coming up at Golden Acre Park, Leeds at the end of August. It’s the perfect chance to get some gorgeous, relaxed images without committing to a full session – plus, we’ll have all the beautiful late-summer light and lush park backdrops to play with.

Spaces are limited (and tend to go faster than my kids run when they hear the word “ice cream”), so if you fancy joining me for a fun, laughter-filled half hour – rain or shine – pop me a message and let’s make it happen.
